Training Doctors

We have several new developments in this area.

Dr Rankin has become a GP trainer for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Post Graduate Deanery which is responsible for the training of general practitioners in our area.

Each year we hope to have a doctor in training who has completed hospital training and is therefore very experienced but who needs to learn how to become a fully fledged general practitioner in their own right. The contribution from the patients in the practice is vital in this respect.

The name for this doctor is a GP Registrar. They are under Dr Rankin's direct supervision and he will be happy to answer any questions regarding these doctors.

To be properly vocationally trained as a GP, they must submit a video of consultations they have performed in the surgery to be assessed by other GP trainers from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Post Graduate Deanery. These videos are sent by recorded delivery to the Deanery doctors involved. The videos may be retained for a short period of time because of registrars' appeals to do with training. However, they are destroyed immediately after this period has expired. Confidentiality is maintained at all times and the only individuals viewing these videos are qualified general practitioners who are bound by the General Medical Council's code of confidentiality. (Please see below for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery advice on these matters.)

You will always be asked for your written consent for your consultation to be videoed. No examinations are ever recorded, simply the verbal and other interactions between the patient and the doctor. The video camera may be present in the room at other times but it is not switched on. If you have any queries regarding these matters please contact Dr Rankin.

Sunny Meed Surgery - A Training Practice

Our practice is now officially accredited as a training practice under the auspices of the GP Deanery for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. This means that each year we hope to have a doctor who has completed hospital training join us in the practice to gain knowledge and experience of general practice. This doctor is known as a GP Registrar and, while here, will be under the direct supervision of our GP trainer, Dr Rankin.

As part of their training process, a GP registrar must submit video recordings of consultations they have performed in the surgery. This is so that a record of such consultations can be sent to the KSS Deanery to be assessed by other GP trainers. The videos are sent by recorded delivery and will only be viewed by qualified general practitioners who are bound by the General Medical Council’s code of confidentiality. As soon as they are no longer needed all such recordings are erased.

Prior to your attending a consultation with a GP registrar, your written consent would always be sought for the consultation to be recorded. It should be pointed out that no physical examinations are ever recorded, only the verbal and other interactions between the patient and the doctor. Whilst you are under no obligation to give your consent to a recording, your co-operation is invaluable in helping with the training of our future general practitioners. Should you have any queries about consultations with the GP registrar, please contact Dr Rankin directly.

To ensure that the practice continues to meet the standards for training set by the KSS Deanery, that body and the doctors here will be subject to regular inspection visits (normally every three years). At this inspection an independent doctor will assess the quality of patient records. If you would rather not have your medical records available for this inspection, please inform the practice. Your wishes will be respected.

Practice Staff

Mrs Filippa Dilena AMSPAR Dip in Practice Management is the practice manager and is responsible for the administration of the practice. She would be happy to hear your views and suggestions about the services offered by the practice.

Reception Staff

The ladies behind the reception desk will assist you in making routine and emergency appointments to see your doctor, undertake repeat prescriptions, answer any queries or questions that you may have and offer any assistance that they are able to. Please remember that at some periods during the day, particularly Monday morning, they are extremely busy and may not be able to answer the telephone immediately. It is a legal requirement that confidentiality of patients' records is maintained at the highest level by all staff.
